Zircon is the oldest mineral on Earth. Zircon crystals found in the Jack Hills of Western Australia are estimated to be over 4.4 billion years old, making them the oldest known material of terrestrial origin.

In the Middle Ages, people believed that zircon had special powers. It was thought to induce sound sleep, ward off evil spirits, and bring prosperity and wisdom to its wearer.
