Vintage Colour Change Sapphire 14ct Gold Ring

Eyecatching vintage 14ct yellow gold ring set with a gorgeous large synthetic colour change sapphire, in a decorative openwork scroll gallery.

There are two hallmarks are located to the outer band, one mark is partially rubbed. This ring is likely from the Soviet Union. 

This fascinating gem is beautiful, it changes colour from deep amethyst purple to fuscia pink depending on the light saturation.

The first synthetic lab created sapphire was successfully made in 1873 by the flux method. This was followed shortly by the flame fusion method in 1902. Needless to say, at the turn of the century synthetic gemstones were quickly rising in popularity, particularly in the Art Deco period. They have the same chemical composition as earth mined gems.
