Vintage 1972 Russian 14ct rose gold solitaire ring, claw set with a synthetic lab grown pink sapphire in a raised buttercup setting.

Hallmark: Star symbol '583' for 14ct gold, '2ЛЮ' symbol for 1972 Leningrad Jewellery factory, partially rubbed '26'

The first synthetic sapphire was successfully made in 1873 by the flux method. This was followed shortly by the flame fusion method in 1902. Needless to say, at the turn of the century synthetic gemstones were quickly rising in popularity. They have the same chemical composition as an earth minded sapphire.
