Art Deco 9ct Gold Spinel Ring
Art Deco 9ct Gold Spinel Ring
Vintage Art Deco 9ct gold octagon cut synthetic (lab grown) spinel ring, circa 1930s. The spinel is a gorgeous teal green-blue colour, claw set in 9ct white and yellow gold. The shoulders feature a graduated circular design in white gold, the band is 9ct yellow gold.
Flame fusion synthetic spinels have been produced since 1908, becoming commercial available in 1930. They feature prominently in Art Deco jewellery and have the same chemical composition as earth mined spinels.
The name spinel comes from the Greek word for spark. The name has also been said to come from the Latin word spina for spine or thorn, because spinel is often found as very sharp crystals. Mentions of this gem are found in records dating to the 9th century AD, and the British Royal Imperial crown is also set with spinel.
